Sick and tired of tooth loss? Be done with it once and for all when you get dental implants.

An incomplete smile can make anyone feel self-conscious. Find out how your Wheaton, IL dentist Dr. David Carlson can change all that dental implantswith dental implants.

What makes implants last?

This small screw made from titanium may not look like much at first glance but this is the part that’s going to replace your missing tooth’s roots. The science and success behind implants are relatively simple. Your Wheaton, IL cosmetic dentist will first drill a small hole into the jawbone. This is where your implant will be placed. Of course, any surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia and with some form of sedation to make our patients more comfortable.

Then, we open up the gums and place the implant into the jawbone. Over the course of several weeks the bone will begin to grow back around the implant, making the implant part of the jawbone. This process is known as osseointegration and implants are the only dental restoration that actually becomes a permanent structure. With the proper maintenance and care your implant is built to last the rest of your life.

Why do people get dental implants?

There are countless reasons why someone would want to get dental implants. Many people find that a smile with missing teeth makes it significantly challenging to eat and chew properly. This means you may not be getting the proper nutrients your body needs; not to mention the absolute frustration of not being able to eat foods you once loved.

We also see people looking to replace one, several or all of their teeth. Some of these patients are denture wearers that aren’t completely satisfied with their dental prosthesis. Maybe it isn’t as easy to talk or eat as they thought it would be. Maybe their dentures continue to slip around. Whatever the reason, rest assured dental implants do not cause these same problems.

How many implants will I need?

A dental implant is designed to hold a single dental crown but multiple implants can also be placed along the jawbone to replace as many as all of your teeth. If you are looking to replace a full set of teeth in either the lower or upper jaw we may place as few as three implants or as many as seven or eight. These implants are designed to hold a dental crown, as well as a partial or full set of dentures.
